The Greatest of All Time was theatrically released on September 5, 2024, in both standard and IMAX formats. In addition to the original Tamil version, it was also made available in dubbed versions in Telugu and Hindi, with the Hindi title being Thalapathy is the G.O.A.T. In the United Kingdom, the film debuted on the same day, receiving a 15 rating from the British Board of Film Classification for strong violence, threats, injury details, and disturbing scenes, with no cuts made.

The Greatest of All Time grossed ₹100.5 crore (US$12 million) worldwide on its opening day, making it the second highest first-day gross for a Tamil film, with over ₹53 crore (US$6.4 million) coming from India. This marked Vijay’s second film to surpass the ₹100 crore milestone on opening day, following Leo (2023). Within four days, the film crossed ₹200 crore (US$24 million), making Vijay the first Tamil actor to achieve eight consecutive films that reached this milestone.
Debuting at second place in the worldwide box office behind Beetlejuice, the film grossed an estimated ₹288 crore (US$35 million) during its opening weekend. In Tamil Nadu, it crossed the ₹100 crore mark in its opening weekend, becoming the second fastest film to do so after Leo, surpassing Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022). Additionally, it became the second Tamil film to enter Comscore’s global weekend chart, ranking as the ninth highest-grossing film of that weekend.
On its first Monday, the film earned ₹13.50 crore (US$1.6 million) in Tamil Nadu alone, breaking the record previously held by Vikram (2022) for the highest first-Monday gross in the state. The film surpassed the ₹300 crore (US$36 million) mark worldwide within six days, becoming Vijay’s fourth film to reach this milestone after Bigil (2019), Varisu (2023), and Leo. It also became the sixth Tamil film to achieve over ₹400 crore (US$48 million), crossing this mark within 11 days of its release. In Tamil Nadu, it grossed ₹191.75 crore (US$23 million) in 12 days, beating Jailer (2023). By its third Friday, it crossed ₹200 crore (US$24 million), becoming the third film to do so and emerging as the third highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu.
The Greatest of All Time emerged as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024 and the third highest-grossing Indian film of the year. It also became the fifth highest-grossing Tamil film overseas, the fifth highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, the 11th highest-grossing South Indian film ever, and the 29th highest-grossing Indian film overall.
